Preserving Nigeria's Living Heritage & Endangered Monuments for Wikimedia Commons
“A photograph under an open Creative Commons license is an everlasting gift to posterity. When an ancient festival or architectural landmark is preserved on Wikimedia Commons, its story survives forever.”
A visual artist and passionate documentary photographer, Kolawole Oyewole joined Wikimedia Nigeria after witnessing how few high-resolution, openly licensed photographs depicted authentic Nigerian architecture, cultural festivals, and wildlife on the web.
Kolawole began leading photo walks into historic districts, from the ancient walls of Kano and the sacred groves of Osogbo to colonial-era architecture in Calabar and Lagos Island. His lens captures not just buildings, but the living spirit of communities celebrating masquerades, traditional craftsmanship, and daily commerce.
"A single photograph on Wikimedia Commons can be reused by researchers in Tokyo, school children in Nairobi, and journalists in London. It liberates our visual heritage from dusty archives into the open global commons."
With more than 4,200 freely licensed uploads to his credit, Kolawole now serves as a national juror for campaigns like Wiki Loves Earth and Wiki Loves Africa, training aspiring visual storytellers on intellectual property, metadata attribution, and photographic documentation.
