Bridging Healthcare Literacy & Open Knowledge Across African Universities
“When medical students and practitioners edit Wikipedia, millions of ordinary Nigerians gain free access to life-saving, peer-reviewed health information in language they understand.”
During his undergraduate medical training at the University of Ibadan, Dr. Isaac Olatunde recognized that Wikipedia was one of the most frequently visited online sources of health information for both patients and junior healthcare workers across Sub-Saharan Africa.
However, many articles on tropical diseases—such as Lassa fever, sickle cell disease, and malaria prevention—lacked region-specific epidemiological context and up-to-date peer-reviewed clinical citations. In response, Isaac co-founded the University of Ibadan Wikimedia Fan Club, mobilizing medical students, pharmacists, and public health scholars to systematically review and enhance biomedical content.
"Open knowledge in healthcare is not just an intellectual pursuit; in emerging communities, reliable information accessible on mobile devices literally saves lives."
Through structured campus workshops, Dr. Olatunde introduced hundreds of university undergraduates to Wikipedia’s verifiability standards and the Wiki Project Med framework. His efforts have catalyzed ongoing partnerships with university teaching hospitals and health literacy NGOs nationwide.
