Capacity Development

Equipping women, software developers, and emerging leaders with technical skills, open-source coding, and encyclopedic literacy.

Fostering technical capabilities, non-profit governance, leadership literacy, and advanced wiki editing skills is vital to creating a resilient, self-sustaining network of contributors across Nigeria and West Africa.
Gender Diversity & Digital InclusionLaunched April 2016

She Can with ICT Collaboration

In April 2016, Jack Rabah met Modupe Darabidan, Head of Business Development, at the Mobile West Africa conference in Lagos to forge a strategic collaboration on the She Can with ICT project. Through this partnership, Wikimedia Nigeria trained women on digital participation and how to contribute effectively to Wikipedia.

The SHE CAN WITH ICT (Sustaining Her Enterprise, Career, and Network with ICT) initiative comprised a series of entrepreneurship and digital technology workshops designed for women preparing for business and professional careers across four comprehensive modules: Digital Literacy & Advocacy, Entrepreneurship & Readiness, Mentorship, and Internship.

We led the Digital Literacy module to expose women to technology opportunities, bridge the severe systemic gender gap on Wikipedia, and counter the underrepresentation of African female editors and African women's biographies online.

Specialized Training by the Wikimedia Foundation

In May 2018, Asaf Bartov, Senior Program Officer for Emerging Wikimedia Communities at the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), visited Nigeria to conduct executive capacity-building sessions for members of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria.

Intensive training workshops were organized across both Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja). Over 50 active users, including student leaders from our campus fan clubs, received specialized instruction in copyright, encyclopedic neutrality (NPOV), and Wikidata semantic querying.
