Closing the Gender Knowledge Divide Through WikiGap Nigeria
“Nigerian women have shaped history, science, technology, and literature for centuries. Our mission is to ensure their achievements are permanently documented and celebrated on the global stage.”
Globally, only approximately 19% of biographies on Wikipedia feature women. In Nigeria, Blessing Leke decided that passive awareness was not enough—systemic collective action was required.
Partnering with the Embassy of Sweden in Nigeria and local civil society groups, Blessing took the helm of the WikiGap Nigeria Campaign. She organized intensive edit-a-thons targeting the documentation of Nigerian female innovators, judges, scientists, authors, and grassroots community organizers.
"If young girls cannot find women who look like them achieving greatness in the world’s most accessible encyclopedia, we risk narrowing their horizon of what is possible."
Over the past four years, Blessing’s workshops have welcomed hundreds of first-time editors into the movement, establishing supportive mentorship circles and publishing nearly a thousand new thoroughly cited biographical entries across English and Nigerian language Wikipedias.
