“Contributing to Wikipedia gave me the power to tell the story of my hometown and my language in my own words. Free knowledge belongs to all of us.”
From organizing campus training sessions in Kwara State to leading international edit-a-thons for the Yorùbá Wikipedia, Bukola James is ensuring African culture and indigenous history are accurately represented on the world's largest open encyclopedia.

Growing up in Kwara State, Bukola James observed a stark disparity: while global history was abundantly available online, local Nigerian heritage, traditional folklore, and indigenous languages were critically underrepresented.

When she discovered the Wikimedia movement in 2017, she recognized an opportunity not merely to read history, but to write it. Bukola joined the nascent campus outreach initiative and quickly rose to become the lead coordinator of the Kwara Wikimedia Fan Club.

Her volunteer journey has focused on two central pillars: Indigenous Language Equity and Youth Empowerment. Under her leadership, the Kwara community organized dozens of edit-a-thons translating encyclopedic entries into Yorùbá, documenting indigenous crafts, and organizing photo expeditions across historical sites in Ilorin, Offa, and surrounding communities.

"When you preserve a language on Wikipedia, you aren't just saving words—you are keeping an entire cultural worldview alive for generations who will navigate a digital world."

Today, Bukola mentors dozens of young contributors, champions gender equity sprints like WikiGap, and regularly represents the Nigerian community at regional and global Wikimania summits. Her story stands as a beacon for how grassroots passion transforms into international open-knowledge advocacy.
