The remarkable women series ( RWS) is an event designed by African Women on Board ( AWB) and Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation Incorporation to create visibility for Nigerian women through regular training and editathon by female Wikipedians in Nigeria.
The core goals of the series are:
- Increase Visibility of Nigeria women on Wikipedia
- Identify existing Wikipedia articles about Nigeria Women on Wikipedia that need improvement.
- Training potential female Wikipedians on how to use Wikipedia for content creation.
AWB is an expanding network of African women on the continent and in the Diaspora who aspire to become leaders within their workplaces, communities, and governments. Wikimedia User Group Nigeria ( Registered as Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation Inc) was established in Nigeria to promote Wikimedia projects in Nigeria.
The second edition of RWS took place on the 18th of December 2020 at the AWB office, Victoria Island Lagos, Nigeria. Participants at the conference include the MD of the AWB Dr. Nkiru Balonwu and other female participants. According to Nkiru, AWB is poised to support any initiatives that tend to improve the visibility of women and girls of African heritage. The foundation will continue to work with Wikimedia Nigeria foundation to bridge the existing gap on Nigeria women’s biography on Wikipedia. In 2020, the two organisations are planning to make the series a-monthly event where female writers from all walk(s )of life will be engaged on online digital content creation.
The 3hour event ended with the creation of 3 articles and improvement of some articles about Nigerian women biography.
The training was conducted by Olaniyan Olushola, the president Wikimedia Nigeria Foundation.
